Your Rights
As a student at IVC, you have the right to ask for and receive information about:
- All types of financial aid you can apply for — like federal, state, or college-based programs.
- Deadlines for turning in financial aid applications and other required documents.
- Costs to attend IVC, including fees, tuition, and the refund rules if you drop out (withdraw).
- How financial aid is given out — including how IVC decides who gets it and how financial need is determined.
- What income or resources are counted when deciding how much aid you can get.
- How your financial aid award is decided.
- A breakdown of your financial aid package — and the right to ask for a review if you think it’s not fair.
- What part of your aid is a loan (you must pay back) and what part is a grant (you
don’t have to pay back). Imperial Valley College does not offer any student loans
on your Financial Aid Award Offer.
- What “Satisfactory Academic Progress” means — and what happens if you don’t meet those standards.
- How to ask for more help if your family’s financial situation changes.
Your Responsibilities
When you apply for and receive financial aid at IVC, you are responsible for:
- Learning about IVC’s academic programs before signing up for classes.
- Filling out all forms carefully and completely, and turning them in on time. If you
make mistakes or turn things in late, your aid might be delayed. Giving false information
on purpose is against the law and could lead to serious consequences
- Returning any extra documents or updates the Financial Aid Office or any agency asks
for as soon as possible.
- Reading and understanding all forms before you sign or agree to them online
- Doing your work if you accept a Federal Work-Study job
- Following all deadlines for applying or reapplying for financial aid and understanding
IVC’s refund rules
- Paying back financial aid money if it turns out you weren’t supposed to get it.
- Maintaining Satisfactory Academic Progress and making progress towards completion
of your degree.
- Telling the Financial Aid Office if you get scholarships or money from outside sources.
