The Licensed Vocational Nursing (LVN) program at IVC offers training and education for
men and women who are 18 years of age or older, in good health, and can lift over
35lbs minimum. The program prepares the student for nursing roles focused on providing
basic patient care under the supervision of registered nurses (RN) or physicians. Students
interested must complete the program’s admission criteria. A student must apply to
the program and if selected are invited to join the LVN class. A total of 20 students
will be accepted each program term. Courses are offered in the daytime; no evening
courses are offered for this program. Applications for a new cohort of students is accepted
every 1.5 years.
The first LVN class started in 1963, and a total of 29 students graduated in 1964. The LVN program has continued to graduate students each program term for over 60 years. The curriculums are continually modified to keep up with the standards of the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians. This is a 1.5 years (18 months), three semester program whereby students are awarded an Associate of Science degree in Vocational Nursing from IVC and eligible to take the national licensure exam called the NCLEX-PN.
The following criteria is required to apply – students should refer to the College Catalog to make sure of course descriptions and requirements of each course. The Multi-Criteria Grid outlines the point values that will determine ranking for the program.
Students must be a U.S. high school graduate or have completed the GED, be 18 years of age or older, in good health and able to lift minimum 35lb or more and have met the prerequisite course work. Foreign high school transcripts or diplomas are not accepted and must be evaluated before applying. Completion of courses with a minimum 2.5 GPA meets eligibility to apply.
All applications received during the open periods will be considered for admission. A point system is used following the Multi-Criteria Grid to determine status. Applicants are ranked and the top ranking will be invited to join a nursing class, up to 20 slots will be available per class. Results are sent to applicants by email 60 days after the last day of the deadline period.
If admitted, students will receive an email on what needs to be completed before starting the program.
