Code of Conduct
The IVC Spencer Library provides a safe, inclusive, welcoming, and productive environment
for reading, learning, and other activities for all students, faculty, staff, and
visitors. To ensure a positive experience for everyone, please follow these guidelines:
- Respect for Others
- Treat fellow students, faculty, staff, and library property with respect always.
- Disruptive, threatening, or abusive behavior or language, including harassment or
discrimination, will not be tolerated.
- Public displays of affection (PDA) should be kept appropriate for an academic setting.
Excessive displays of affection that may disrupt others or make them uncomfortable
are not permitted.
- Embrace and respect the library’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, equity, and
accessibility (DEIA). The library is a space for all members of the college community,
free from discrimination or harassment.
- Noise Levels
- Maintain a quiet environment to support study and academic work.
- Use cell phones and other electronic devices outside of the library, and ensure they
are on silent mode while inside.
- When using audio or video content, always wear headphones and keep the volume low
enough not to disturb others.
- Use of Library Spaces
- Use library spaces and resources (e.g., study rooms, computers, printers) for academic
and college-related purposes.
- Group activities such as classes, presentations, review sessions, club meetings, or
any gatherings that may disrupt others should be held in enclosed spaces or designated
areas outside the library.
- Follow any specific rules posted in different areas of the library, such as group
study rooms or quiet zones.
- Clean up after yourself, dispose of trash properly, and report spills to the circulation
desk.
- Filming and photography for academic or university purposes are permitted. Filming
or photographing library staff and patrons without their consent is prohibited.
- Use of Library Materials
- Library materials must be checked out before leaving the premises.
- Reserve materials must be used in the library only and are subject to time limits
for usage.
- Attendance and Time Limits
- Be mindful that library resources, such as computers and study rooms, are shared.
During busy times, ensure fair access for all users.
- Privacy and Confidentiality
- Respect the privacy of others. Do not share personal information or access others'
accounts or materials without permission.
- Follow library policies regarding the confidentiality of borrowing records and other
private information.
- Food and Drink
- To maintain cleanliness and prevent pests, only light snacks are allowed in the library.
Drinks in reusable containers with secure lids (e.g., sport bottles, thermoses) are
permitted. Fast-food drink containers are not allowed.
- Safety and Security
- Always keep personal belongings with you. The library is not responsible for lost
or stolen items.
- Report any suspicious activity, unattended items, or safety concerns to library staff
immediately.
- Only service animals actively assisting persons with disabilities are allowed in the
library. Other animals are not permitted.
- Entering restricted areas of the library is prohibited and is considered trespassing.
- Users must leave the library at closing, during emergencies, or when instructed by
library staff or campus safety personnel.
- Theft, vandalism, graffiti, or intentional damage to library property, collections,
or exhibits is a criminal offense, and campus security will be contacted.
- Appropriate Attire
- Wear appropriate clothing, including shoes and shirts, while in the library to maintain
a respectful and professional environment.
- Children and Supervision
- Parents/guardians are responsible for the safety and behavior of their children in
the library. Children under 12 must be always supervised. Library staff are not responsible
for unescorted or unsupervised children.
- Compliance with Laws and Policies
- Follow all local, state, and federal laws, as well as college and library policies.
Users are expected to follow the guidelines established in IVC AP 5500 Standards of
Student Conduct.
- Unauthorized solicitation, distribution of materials, proselytizing, or commercial
activities within the library are not allowed.
- Comply with U.S. Copyright Law (17 U.S.C.) and its amendments, including the Fair
Use provision (17 U.S.C. 107).
Consequences of Non-Compliance. Violating the Library Code of Conduct may result in a range of consequences, including
warnings, suspension of library privileges, or removal from the library premises.
In serious cases, college administration or campus security may be involved.
