About Non-Credit Education
Imperial Valley College (IVC) Non-Credit Education program prepares Basic Skills learners,
English as a Second Language learners, disadvantaged populations, and other non-traditional
college students to attain the essential knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully
acquire and retain employment, transition to college, and/or explore career pathways
leading to growth opportunities in various occupations.
Who may attend Non-Credit classes?
Anyone 18 years of age or older. Students holding F1/F2 and B1/B2 Visas are NOT allowed
to enroll in non-credited classes. Classes are only open to students living in California.
What does it cost?
All non-credited courses are FREE.
English as a Second Language (ESL)
Assist second language learners in improving their English listening, speaking and
pronunciation skills in order to reach their career, academic and personal goals.
Classes also incorporate civics education to community members and prospective United
States citizens.
Citizenship
Introduces students to U.S. citizenship and naturalization process, U.S. history and
government. Prepares students for the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS)
interview and exam.
Credit vs. Non-Credit classes
In general, credited classes are designed for students who are interested in earning
college credits towards an associate degree, certificate or transfer to a four-year
college or university. Students who take credited classes receive a letter grade (A,
B, C, D or F) at the end of the semester or term.
Non-credited classes are intended for students who want to gain general knowledge,
learn a new skill, upgrade existing skills, enrich their understanding about a topic
or develop personal interests. Non-credited classes are also a way to enhance learning
in credited classes. Upon completion of a non-credited class, students may receive
a grade of Pass (P), No Pass (NP) or Withdrawal (W). Non-credited classes WILL NOT
appear on the official transcript.
Students may enroll to both non-credited and credited classes at the same time, as
long as they are in good academic standing.
How many non-credit classes may students take?There is no limitation as to how many non-credited classes a student may take. Students
may also repeat a non-credited class without limitation.
