Basic Needs

Basic Needs Team

Welcome to the Basic Needs Center!

Here at the Basic Needs Center, we understand that students face many challenges. Beyond the pressures of academics, external factors can sometimes make it hard to focus on your studies. To combat these challenges and ensure students have a fair shot at success, we have designed a nurturing environment equipped with resources tailored to meet your needs.

To access any of these resources, simply complete an intake appointment with one of our dedicated Specialists. Booking is easy! You can email any of our specialists, give us a call, or drop by the Basic Needs Center at room 401.

For any student facing food insecurity or in an immediate economic crisis, we would recommend to submit a Request for Assistance form.

For questions about specific resources, please contact the Basic Needs team at 760-355-1826 or email us at equity@imperial.edu

*Please keep in mind all students must schedule an intake appointment.

Here's a quick overview of what we offer:

Food Pantry/IVC Kitchen: No student should ever have to study on an empty stomach. We provide a range of food programs, such as the Grab and Go bag and Dinner box program, to ensure you're well-fed and ready to learn.

Kroger Food Gift Cards & IV Food Bank Partnership: To further ensure food security, we offer Kroger Food gift cards for groceries and have joined hands with the IV Food Bank for a monthly food distribution event. This initiative serves both our student community and the wider local community registered for the program.

Lending Library: Books can be expensive, but they're fundamental to your academic journey. Our Lending library lends textbooks to students, ensuring you have access to required materials without the burden of cost.

Laptops / Wi-Fi towers: In today's digital age, technology is paramount to academic success. We offer laptops and Wi-Fi towers on loan for students who might not have access to them.

School Supplies & Hygiene Kits: We believe in comprehensive well-being. Alongside academic resources, we also offer essential school supplies and hygiene kits that include paper, pens, binders, and toiletries.

Transportation Aids: Transportation should not be a barrier to education. We provide gas cards and bus passes to ensure students can commute to and from campus smoothly.

Basic Needs Toolkit:
To learn more about how to support students experiencing various basic needs or wellness situations, please take a look at our Basic Needs Toolkit designed for faculty, staff, and student leaders.
The primary purpose of the toolkit is to assist California community college leaders, staff, and administrators with planning, implementing, and improving their basic needs centers and services. The focus of the toolkit is practical action steps, innovative practices, and research supported strategies.

Affordable internet for students
The Affordable Connectivity Program is an FCC benefit program that helps ensure that households can afford the broadband they need for work, school, healthcare and more.
The benefit provides a discount of up to $30 per month toward internet service for eligible households. For Example: Spectrum typically charges $50 per month. With this discount program, a student could possibly receive internet for $20 per month. Please note that IVC does not promote one internet provider over another. The example is simply for informational purposes.
