The need for refrigeration and air-conditioning exists worldwide. Someone has to know
how to put them in and keep them going. Technicians repair, maintain, and install
heating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration systems. Without technicians the residents
of the Imperial County would suffer from heat exhaustion in the summer, while those
in Alaska would freeze without heating; food and medicine would spoil without refrigeration.
We rely on cooling and heating devices help regulate the temperature, humidity, and
air quality in residential homes, commercial locations, and industrial facilities.
Climate controls makes the simply impossible, possible.
More than 249,000 positions were held by heating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration
technicians in 2002. Close to 50% of them were employed by cooling and heating contractors.
Approximately 15% of technicians are self-employed. The rest worked for various industries,
showing just how far a reach these types of systems have on the nation. Employment
is found amongst fuel oil dealers, refrigeration and air-conditioning service and
repair shops, school districts, and stores that sell heating and air-conditioning
systems as well as local and federal governments, hospitals, offices, and other organizations
that utilize huge climate control systems.
Because of the increasing sophistication of heating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration
systems, employers prefer to hire those with technical school or apprenticeship training.
