Faculty Resources
Faculty Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) Checklist:
- Review the IVC CPL webpage resources to familiarize yourself with the CPL process.
- Contact the CPL Coordinator if you determine that one of your courses could be approved
for CPL credit. Determine the method(s) of assessment that best suits this course.
- If Portfolio Review or Credit by Exam is a method of assessment for your course, collaborate
with at least one other faculty discipline expert to develop a rubric or exam. (A
CPL Portfolio rubric template will be provided for you.)
- Discuss the potential of your CPL course with the Department Chair to inform them
of the process. Review and possibly strengthen the course for SLO's to support effective
CPL assessment.
- If Portfolio Review or Credit by Exam is a method of assessment for your course. You
may want to collaborate with at least one other faculty discipline expert to develop
a rubric or exam. (A CPL Portfolio rubric template will be provided for you.)
- If Credit by Exam is a method of assessment for your course, Faculty will need to
complete the Credit by Examination completion form once the Examination has been facilitated and graded. The Faculty then will forward
the completed form to cfpl@imperial.edu
- If Industry Certification or Military Transcript is a method of assessment for your
course, you will need to provide a copy of the certificate and/or military transcript
information to the CPL Coordinator. The Coordinator can also help you determine which
military transcripts align with your course learning outcomes by using the ACE (American council on Education) website as a resource.
- The CPL Coordinator will take the next steps to provide any necessary materials to
student services, for example, adding an industry certification or military transcript
to our database.
- Students will then be able to start their CPL student process.
- The petition will move through the CPL Petition process.
- Faculty will post the credit/grade for the assessment in the CPL petition form.
- The student will accept or decline the grade for the CPL petition form.
- If the student accepts the grade, Admissions and Records will post the grade or credit
to the student's transcript. This grade will then be shown on the student's transcript
as prior learning assessment, with the method of assessment clearly annotated.
- If you are interested in submitting a potential course for CPL that is not currently
approved for CPL, please use the interest form and submit to cpl@imperial.edu
- Faculty are responsible for archival of all exams, portfolios, and all other documentation related to CPL.
